When a flight-critical part is sourced, the evaluation shifts from price to a rigorous supplier risk assessment — because a single nonconforming or late component can stop a line or ground an aircraft. Capacity, quality compliance, and financial stability outrank the quote.

The shift

Lowest bid is a liability. Lowest risk wins the program.

On a consumer part, price is the deciding factor. On a flight-critical aerospace or defense component, it is one of the smallest. A multi-billion-dollar aircraft or weapons program can be held up by one bracket that arrives late, one housing that fails first-article, or one supplier that quietly runs out of capacity at the worst moment.

That is why aerospace OEMs have moved from comparing quotes to running formal supplier risk assessments. Procurement, quality, and program teams score a shop across capacity, compliance, and stability — and weight those dimensions far above unit price. The lowest bidder rarely wins; the lowest-risk supplier does.

The cost of getting it wrong

  • Line-down / AOG — a missing part idles an assembly line or grounds an aircraft
  • Escape to assembly — a nonconformance found downstream is orders of magnitude costlier than one caught at the shop
  • Re-qualification — a supplier swap can mean a fresh first-article and source-approval cycle
  • Single-source exposure — a supplier that folds mid-program is a schedule and reputation risk
