Case hardening depth estimator.

Effective case depth (ECD) for carburizing and induction hardening. Planning-grade — actual depth depends on alloy specifics, atmosphere control, and the specific definition of ‘case’ (ECD-50 HRC vs ECD-40 HRC vs total case).

Carburizing follows √t diffusion kinetics. Doubling time gives ~1.4× depth, not 2×. Temperature has a stronger effect — every ~55 °C (100 °F) increase roughly doubles the diffusion rate, and a +100 °C rise roughly triples it. For accurate prediction on a specific alloy, run a test coupon and measure with microhardness traverse per ASTM E384.
