AMS spec cross-reference.

The Aerospace Material Specifications (AMS) used in defense, aerospace, and space hardware — by alloy, form, and condition. The most-cited specs for the 24 alloys we run, with notes on what each spec actually controls and where it shows up on real drawings.

How to read this

Spec → alloy → condition → application.

AMS specs do three things at once: identify the alloy chemistry (e.g., Ti-6Al-4V), the product form (sheet, plate, bar, forging, casting), and the heat-treat condition (annealed, STA, H900, etc.). One alloy will appear under several AMS numbers depending on form and condition. The spec on the drawing is what governs material acceptance — substituting AMS 5662 for AMS 5663 isn’t allowed without engineering approval, even though both call out Inconel 718.

Below: the AMS specs we deal with most often. Not exhaustive — the AMS catalog is thousands of entries deep. If your drawing cites a spec not listed here, talk to us; we maintain certified material with full chemical and mechanical traceability for AS9100 and AS9102 work.

Titanium alloys

AMS 4943 Ti-3Al-2.5V Tube (seamless) Annealed Grade 9. Hydraulic/instrument tubing; anneal flare-forms well (AMS 4944/4945 = higher-strength CWSR tube).
AMS 4911 Ti-6Al-4V Sheet, strip, plate Annealed The aerospace workhorse. Airframe, fasteners, ducts.
AMS 4928 Ti-6Al-4V Bar, wire, forgings Annealed Most-cited spec for 6Al-4V bar. Brackets, fittings, fasteners.
AMS 4930 Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Grade 23) Bar, billet Annealed Extra-low-interstitial. Medical implants, cryogenic.

Copper, brass, bronze

AMS 4640 C63000 nickel-aluminum bronze Bar, rod, shapes TQ50 / HR50 High-strength nickel-aluminum bronze for bearings, valve stems, marine hardware.

Beyond AMS

Other spec families that cross AMS callouts.

  • ASTM

    Same alloys, broader industries. ASTM B348 covers Ti-6Al-4V bar (ASTM equivalent of AMS 4928). Drawings often cite both.

  • MIL specs (MIL-DTL, MIL-PRF, MIL-STD)

    DOD-controlled documents that may invoke AMS as the underlying material spec. Common on weapon-system drawings.

  • UNS numbers

    Unified Numbering System. UNS S17400 = 17-4PH; UNS N07718 = Inconel 718. Drawings often list UNS alongside AMS.

  • SAE J specs

    SAE Aerospace AMS specs are SAE-managed. SAE-J-spec callouts for ground vehicles parallel AMS for aerospace.

  • DFARS specialty metals

    DFARS 252.225-7009 controls origin of titanium, nickel, and other specialty metals on DOD contracts. AMS-spec material that’s also DFARS-compliant carries a melted-and-poured statement of origin.
