Wire EDM
Fanuc Alpha C400iB-10 — what we run on it.
5-axis wire EDM with rotary axis. 15.7″ × 11.8″ × 10.2″ envelope. Fanuc’s adaptive high-speed control + flexible discharge pulse let us cut faster on standard work while preserving surface quality on tougher materials. Runs alongside the larger Alpha 1iD.
01 · Sweet spot
Medium-envelope EDM with adaptive control.
The C400iB-10 handles parts that fit its 15.7″ × 11.8″ × 10.2″ envelope — most stamping dies, surgical-tool jaws, fixture parts, and aerospace EDM work. The Fanuc adaptive high-speed control automatically tunes discharge parameters to material thickness changes, which speeds up production runs and reduces wire breakage on irregular geometry.
- Stamping & forming dies (D2, A2, S7) up to 4″ thick
- Surgical-tool jaws and cutters (17-4PH, MP35N)
- Aerospace fitment & flexure work in 17-4PH and Inconel
- Production runs of small EDM’d parts where the larger Alpha 1iD is reserved for big work
For full wire-EDM capability detail (cut rate vs thickness, recast layer, when EDM is the right answer), see our Fanuc Alpha 1iD deep-dive.
02 · When NOT to pick this
Wrong-fit jobs.
- Workpiece > 15.7″ X → Fanuc Alpha 1iD (23.6″ envelope).
- Soft material, no sharp inside corners → Mill is faster & cheaper.
- Large material removal → Mill. EDM cuts perimeters, not volumes.
- Non-conductive (plastic, ceramic) → Mill or laser. EDM physically can’t cut non-conductors.
