How to machine Hastelloy C-276.

Hastelloy C-276 is the gold standard for aggressive-chemistry corrosion resistance — better than Inconel for chloride and sulfuric environments, better than stainless across the board. The trade-off is among the worst machinability ratings of any common engineering alloy. Sub-20 machinability rating means slow speeds, premium tooling, and patience. The strategy mirrors Inconel — but slower.

01 · Hastelloy vs Inconel

Tougher in every way.

Hastelloy C-276 and Inconel 718 share the same fundamental machining problem — low thermal conductivity concentrates heat at the cutting edge. The differences:

  • C-276 is even tougher to cut — molybdenum at 16% (vs Inconel’s ~3%) and tungsten at 4% create more cutting-edge wear
  • Solid-solution hardened only — no precipitation hardening, no “machine soft, age later” trick. C-276 ships in solution-annealed condition and stays that way
  • More expensive — $50–80/lb stock cost vs $35–50 for Inconel 718
  • Better corrosion resistance — handles oxidizing AND reducing acids, chloride pitting, sulfuric attack. The reason customers pay the premium

Whisker-reinforced ceramic for roughing follows the same playbook as Inconel — we run it in production and can share the operational detail on request.

03 · Practical notes

Same Inconel discipline, more of it.

  • Tooling: sub-micron-grain coated carbide (PVD AlTiN). Honed cutting edges. Sharp geometry to minimize cutting pressure. Whisker ceramic for high-MRR roughing.
  • Coolant: high-pressure flood with EP additives. Through-tool coolant where available. Carbide flooded; ceramic dry.
  • Don’t reduce feed: same as Inconel — reducing feed lets the tool dwell and work-harden the surface. Maintain proper chip load.
  • Replace tools on schedule: tool failure is sudden in C-276. Cycle-count tool changes; don’t wait for failure.
  • Climb mill always: conventional milling re-cuts chips and accelerates work-hardening.
  • Common applications: chemical-processing valve trim, scrubber fans, pollution-control hardware, exhaust system components for sour-service environments.
