How to machine 4130 chromoly steel.

4130 is the lightly-alloyed cousin of 4140 — same chromium and molybdenum but lower carbon. The lower carbon makes it easier to weld (the defining trait for race-car, motorsport, and aircraft tube structure) and slightly easier to machine in the bargain. Standard process: machine in normalized condition, weld if needed, post-weld stress-relief if the application demands it.

02 · Practical notes

Weldability is the differentiator.

  • Tooling: coated carbide (PVD AlTiN). Same tooling as 4140 but slightly easier on the edges due to lower carbon content.
  • Coolant: water-soluble flood at 6–10% concentration. Standard chip-breaker insert geometry.
  • Weld considerations: 4130 is tig-welded routinely for tube structure. Sections over 0.187″ thick benefit from pre-heat; post-weld stress-relief at 595 °C for 1 hour per inch of thickness restores fatigue properties.
  • Heat treat: can be Q&T to higher strength (~150 ksi UTS), but most 4130 service runs in normalized condition for weldability. Weld first, then heat-treat if higher strength is needed.
  • 4130 vs 4140: 4140 has 0.4% C, 4130 has 0.3% C. 4140 hardens deeper and runs higher Q&T strength. 4130 welds better. Both follow the same machining strategy — see 4140 guide.
  • Common AMS: 6370 (round bar), 6350 (sheet/plate), 6360/6371 (tubing). See AMS spec cross-reference.
