02 · Sweet spot

Done-in-one production parts.

The SMX’s 9-axis architecture (X/Y/Z + B + C on the main, sub-spindle X/Z, lower turret X/Z) lets us do almost any combination of turn + mill + drill + thread + back-work in a single chucking. Real applications:

  • Defense fastener & pin work — 17-4PH, 304/316 stainless, titanium. Bar-to-finished-part with cross-hole drilling, wrench flats, and threaded ends in one cycle.
  • Aerospace bushings & sleeves — Inconel, Ti-6Al-4V. ID-OD concentricity 0.0002″ held by single chucking.
  • Medical instrument bodies — 316L, 17-4PH H1025. Hex broaches, axial slots, and radial features off one bar — no secondary milling op.
  • Hydraulic valve trim — chromoly, 4140. Internal lands, port-angles, threaded sealing surfaces all in one setup.
  • UAV motor housings & bearing carriers — 7075, MIC-6. ID bores with face-mounting flange and angled bolt patterns.

03 · Why turn-mill matters

One setup beats four.

A traditional production flow on a complex turn+mill part runs lathe → re-fixture → vertical mill → re-fixture → horizontal mill → re-fixture → secondary lathe. Every fixture change introduces stack-up error and adds setup time. The SMX collapses that whole chain to one cycle.

For TIR-critical work (concentricity, runout, perpendicularity to a turned datum) this is decisive. We’ve held 0.0002″ concentricity on parts with 7+ features that conventionally would have needed re-indication on every setup.

04 · When NOT to pick this machine

Wrong-fit jobs.

  • Bar < 1.0″ with high L:D → Tsugami Swiss-type. Guide bushing handles deflection-prone small-diameter work better.
  • Pure prismatic 5-sided work → Kitamura Mytrunnion. Trunnion 5-axis is faster on non-rotational geometry.
  • Plate / large-envelope mill → Haas VF-6 or DNM-4500-S. SMX is bar-fed; plate work needs vise.
  • Simple OD/ID turning, low complexity → Daewoo Puma 12S or Lynx 200L. SMX programming overhead doesn’t amortize on 2-feature parts.
