3D Surface Measurement
Keyence VR-6200 — what we run on it.
Non-contact 3D surface profilometer with sub-micron Z-axis resolution. Where a CMM samples discrete points and the IM-7000 measures 2D outlines, the VR-6200 captures the entire surface as a continuous 3D mesh — the right tool for blade profiles, optical mounting surfaces, conformal cooling channels, and any geometry where surface form (not just dimensions) drives function.
01 · What we use it for
Surface form, not just dimensions.
The VR-6200 fills the gap between dimensional measurement (Hexagon CMM, IM-7000) and full surface metrology. Every measured point on the part contributes to the surface model — so we can compare actual geometry against the CAD nominal across the entire feature, not just at the points a stylus could touch.

- Sub-lightband flatness — seal faces, optical reference surfaces, bellows compression registers where leak-tight integrity depends on flatness
- Conformal cooling channel verification — internal channel profile after machining, before brazing or sealing. Paired with our cooling-channel pressure-drop calculator for as-built ΔP prediction.
- Wear & deformation analysis — comparing a worn part against the new-part scan to quantify use-induced changes
- Surface finish characterization — Ra, Rz, RMS over a 3D area, not just a 2D trace
02 · Why non-contact matters
No probe-tip deflection, no surface damage.
A tactile probe deflects under contact pressure — that's a known error contribution on every CMM measurement. For polished optical surfaces, soft materials, or thin-wall geometry where probe pressure would distort the actual feature, non-contact is the only way to get a true measurement. The VR-6200 measures the surface as it sits, undeformed, with no risk of scratch marks or witness lines on critical finishes.
Non-contact also means we can scan parts faster than CMM tactile probing — minutes instead of hours for complex surface geometry. Output is a 3D mesh compatible with PolyWorks and GD&T evaluation workflows, so the inspection report integrates with the rest of our AS9102 documentation.
03 · When something else is better
Pick the right tool.
- Datum-referenced GD&T → Hexagon Global S CMM. True position, runout, and full datum-scheme GD&T are tactile-CMM work.
- 2D feature measurement at speed → Keyence IM-7000. For small turned parts with many 2D features per cycle.
- Internal bore profile → bore gauges + the CMM with a long stylus. The VR-6200 can't see into deep blind bores.
- Highly reflective polished surfaces → may need a temporary anti-reflective spray for the scan to capture cleanly.
