Profile of a surface.
The 3D tolerance for complex curved or contoured surfaces — airfoil profiles, optical mounting blends, conformal cooling channels, sculptured aerospace fairings. Defines a 3D tolerance zone bounded by surfaces parallel to the basic shape, separated by the tolerance value.
01 · Definition
Volumetric tolerance band.
Profile of a surface creates a 3D tolerance zone defined by basic dimensions (the nominal CAD-defined surface) and bounded on both sides by parallel surfaces at half the tolerance value. The entire toleranced surface must lie within this 3D zone.
Without datums: pure form control. The surface must match the basic shape but is free to translate or rotate within the inspection setup.
With datums (the more common case): form, location, and orientation control all in one. The tolerance zone is fixed in space relative to the datum reference frame, so the actual surface must match the basic shape AND be in the right place.
02 · FCF and example
Turbine vane airfoil.
A turbine vane airfoil with ⌓ 0.005 A B C. The basic airfoil profile is defined by the CAD model and basic dimensions; the actual surface must lie within ±0.0025″ (bilateral) of the basic shape across the entire airfoil, with the shape located by the datum reference frame.
Inspection: 5-axis CMM with scanning probe. The probe traces the actual surface, software compares each measured point to the nearest basic-surface point, and the maximum deviation is the actual profile. PolyWorks or equivalent metrology software handles the geometry.
Production strategy: simultaneous 5-axis machining is the right tool. 3+2 indexed leaves stair-step lines that hurt the profile result. See 5-axis vs 3+2 comparison.
03 · Common applications
Where profile of a surface is the only right answer.
- Airfoils: turbine and compressor blades, propeller blades, aircraft control surfaces — anything with continuous-curve surfaces critical to fluid dynamics
- Optical mounts: aspheric mounting surfaces and reflective contours where surface form drives optical performance

- Aerospace fairings and skin sections: sculpted exterior surfaces where aerodynamic profile matters
- Medical implant surfaces: conformal contours for orthopedic implants, dental abutments, custom surgical guides
