Multi-Axis Turn-Mill
Mori Seiki NL2500SY — what we run on it.
Y-axis live turn-mill lathe with sub-spindle. 3.0″ bar capacity, full live tooling on the turret, off-center milling and drilling on the OD, ID, and front faces. Built for production runs of complex bar parts that need lathe + mill in one cycle.
01 · Sweet spot
Bar parts that need cross-features.
The NL2500SY is the right choice when a bar part has axial features (turning, threading, boring) plus cross-features (off-center holes, hex flats, slotting) that traditionally would require a secondary mill operation. Y-axis lets the live tools work off-center; sub-spindle handles back-work for parted-off completion.
- Hydraulic spool valves with cross-port drilling
- Aerospace fittings with hex wrench flats and threaded ends
- Medical instrument shafts with broached drive features
- Defense pin work with cotter-pin holes and knurled grip features
02 · When NOT to pick this
Wrong-fit jobs.
- Heavy 5-axis cylindrical work → Doosan SMX 2600ST. The B-axis tool spindle on the SMX outperforms a Y-axis turret for complex 5-axis features.
- Twin-cut high-volume production → Doosan TT1800SY. Two turrets cutting in parallel halves cycle on simpler geometry.
- Plain OD/ID turning, no milling → Daewoo Puma 12S or Lynx 200L. Live tooling complexity wasted on simple parts.
- Bar < 1.0″, high L:D → Tsugami Swiss-type.
