Mori Seiki SH503 — what we run on it.
500 mm 4-axis horizontal machining center. The horizontal spindle orientation lets chips fall away from the cut by gravity — critical for deep pockets, long runs, and stainless / nickel-alloy work where chip pack-in kills tools.
01 · Sweet spot
When chips have to evacuate.
The horizontal spindle is the differentiator. Chips fall away from the cut by gravity instead of pooling in the workpiece. For deep-pocket work, long stainless or Inconel cycles, and any program where chip pack-in causes tool breakage, the SH503 substantially outruns vertical machining centers on tool life and unattended run length.
- Deep-pocket cavities in 316L, Inconel 718
- 4-sided machining with index pallet — bracket families with features on multiple faces
- Long cycle programs where unattended chip clearance matters
- Defense ground-vehicle hardware — heavy, multi-feature plate work
02 · When NOT to pick this
Wrong-fit jobs.
- Simultaneous 5-axis → Kitamura Mytrunnion or DVF 5000. SH503 is 4-axis.
- Bar / cylindrical work → Doosan SMX or Mori Seiki turn-mill.
- Quick prototype with simple geometry → DNM-4500-S. Vertical mill setup is faster on simple plate.
- Long-X plate (>500 mm) → Haas VF-6.
